Vocal effects are powerful tools that musical theatre performers use to deepen emotion, create character, and heighten drama. In Complete Vocal Technique (CVT), there are 10 recognised vocal effects – each offering a unique layer of expression. These include: Distortion, Rattle, Grunt, Growl, Screams, Creak/Creaking, Adding Air, Vibrato, Ornamentation (e.g., fast runs), and Vocal Breaks.

In musicals, these effects aren’t just decorative – they’re essential for storytelling. Whether you’re playing a villain, a heartbroken lover, or a character on the edge, vocal effects help bring those emotional states to life. In this blog i’m going to give you examples of the ‘Rough Effects’ in musicals.

🎭 Examples of Vocal Effects in Musical Theatre:

Distortion

These girls are using many of the vocal effects – rattle, growl, distortion, which give the performance that gritty, rock-inspired feel that suits the show perfectly.

Growl

The growls throughout the song inject passion and pain – pure, raw emotion

Rattle

A subtle rattle enhances those high notes, adding texture and edge. I also hear elements of distortion and growl that give the sound real grit and intensity.

Screams

Moments of vocal scream capture desperation. I also hear other effects here including distortion.

Grunt

Green Day’s punk-rock musical uses gritty belting and shouted vocals. I hear many of the effects here – grunt, distortion, growl and screams, including fry scream at the end.

🎤 Why Use Vocal Effects in Musicals?

In musical theatre, the voice is the character. Effects give performers tools to explore emotion and personality while still staying within the structure of a song. These tools must feel spontaneous and emotionally real, even though they’re built on strong technical foundations.

Without proper training, performers risk vocal fatigue or injury – especially when doing 8 shows a week. That’s why, as a CVT-certified coach, I teach not only how to create these effects but how to use them safely, sustainably, and with intention.

🧠 How Are Vocal Effects Created?

They’re produced in various parts of the vocal tract – not by chance, but through deliberate technique. In my Vocal Workshops, I break down the anatomy and physical process behind each effect so performers can apply them with control and confidence.

🏋️‍♀️ Training for Performance

Vocal effects take energy – up to 30% more than standard singing. Think of it like training for a role in a physically demanding play. You need stamina, precision, and awareness to perform them night after night without vocal strain.

🎯 Purpose Over Flash

Just because you can use an effect doesn’t mean you should. In musical theatre, the emotion must always lead the sound. If the effect doesn’t enhance the story or character, it can feel artificial. When used with authenticity, though, vocal effects elevate performance to something unforgettable.
